THINK TANK ON CHILDHOOD OBESITY PREVENTION PILOT PROGRAMS

The North Carolina General Assembly provided $500,000.00 in non-recurring funds (FY 2008 - 2009) to implement school-based pilot programs to address childhood obesity. The State Board of Education established guidelines for designing and implementing the programs.

TASK FORCE ON PREVENTING CHILDHOOD OBESITY

The North Carolina General Assembly (FY 2008-2009) established a Task Force on Preventing Childhood Obesity (Task Force) co-chaired by the Chairman of the State Board of Education and the State Health Director

The Task Force reviewed current State activities in the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Public Instruction, and the Health and Wellness Trust Fund to develop a comprehensive statewide strategic plan with recommendations for preventing childhood obesity.

The goals of the strategic plan encompassed the following framework of initiatives:

  1. Providing healthier food to students
  2. Improving the availability of healthy foods at home and in the community
  3. Increasing the frequency, intensity, and duration of physical activity in the schools
  4. Encouraging communities to establish a master plan for pedestrian and bicycle paths
  5. Improving access to safe places where children can play and
  6. Developing activities or programs that limit children's screen time, including limits on video games and television

SOUTHERN COLLABORATIVE ON OBESITY REDUCTION EFFORTS (SCORE) PROJECT

SCORE is a collaborative project lead by the North Carolina State Board of Education (SBE) with numerous partners and funded by The Council of State Governments. The purpose of the SCORE project is to educate key state and local education policy makers regarding barriers relating to health policy adoption and/or implementation. Efforts are designed to prevent and reduce childhood obesity by specifically targeting physical activity and nutrition.

The NC State Board of Education received $10,000 in competitive grant funding (October 2008 - September 2009) from The Council of State Governments to develop and host three key educational events for policy makers on addressing obesity prevention strategies in schools The key events targeted the NC General Assembly, the State Board of Education members, advisors and staff as well as members of the NC School Boards Association.

Preventing Childhood Obesity Luncheon and Program - May 6, 2009

NC State Board of Education members, advisors and staff were joined by Education Committee members of the NC General Assembly for a luncheon and educational program highlighting three Obesity Pilot Programs; MATCH, IMPACT Childhood Obesity and COPDP. Attendees received a flashdrive provided by NC Healthy Schools which was pre-loaded with numerous childhood obesity reports, updates and resources.

The SCORE Team provided funding for and coordinated presentations by:
